It all started around 1995 at a penny-ante poker game, where just the three of us showed up. During the game, we talked alot about books and theology, and Glenn suggested that we start a book club, so the three of us who have known each other since youth church group days decided that Tom should pick the first book. We never stated a criteria to be used for book selections, although we seemed to have developed some unspoken guidelines. This was likely the result of expectations raised after reading the first book selected, Nouwen's The Return of the Prodigal Son, which became a standard that we attempted to meet or exceed. Most of our book selections resulted in encountering interesting if not engaging perspectives on the Christian faith and philosophy. The context may be theology, apologetics, allegory, fantasy or practical living, but in all cases we find ourselves enjoying most the books with depth... 'deep calls to deep' in the cataracts we encounter in our lives.
